In
between Something Missing
It’s a
surety that Tamil cinema is in safe hands for a long time from now, the kind of
realistic movies coming out these days just adds in to that belief (Am not
talking about the stupid masala flicks here, though they are a necessity to
maintain balance). One such movie is Naduvule Konjam Pakkathe Kanum (NKPK), the
only know face in the movie is its hero Vijay Sethu pathi, thanks to a new
comers brains to have made “Pizzza”. Am sure this movie would have gone on to
garner more praise for Vijay Sethupathy if it had released two years ago when
they completed the project. This is a movie which will appeal to everyone and
does not depend on hero’s image to carry the movie to movie halls, but
unfortunately the producers and distributors does not seem to have believe so
and thus the movie is finally out now thanks to the fact that “Pizza” went on
to become a hit J.
Just as how whacky the promo
song was, as whacky is this movie. The promotion song was an ear catcher thanks
to its broken English. If you are someone who enjoy good realistic movie then
this promo song is an indicator for what is in store in the movie. The
director’s brilliance is evident in the promo song and the title song of the
movie, many directors are using title tracks just for the heck of it, but here
is one different guy who uses the title track to establish his characters. Hats
off to you Balaji Tharaneetharan (Director) for your out of the box thinking
here.
Now to the crux of the movie, the plot is simple; the hero
Prem (Vijay Sethupathy) gets injured while playing cricket with his friends
Saras (Vigneshwaran, debut), Balaji @ Bajji (Rajkumar), Bagavathi @ Bags
(Bagavathi, debut). Prem gets injured on his medulla oblongata (You will know about this portion of the brain
very well in this movie) and suffers from Short term memory loss. To add to the
confusion, the injury happens two days before his marriage to his lover
Dhanalakshmi. The movie is the struggle of his friends Saras, Bags and Bajji to
get Prem married without any problems and nobody knowing about his problem. How
they manage is a clever mixture of suspense, drama and hell a lot of humor.
It’s a
known fact that any smart director can tickle the humor bones of his viewers
using the lead actors and script of the film and does not have to depend on any
comedian to provide that dose of laughter; this movie is one such example. This
has been a practice in Malayalam movies for a long time now (may be even
decades), it’s good to see this healthy practice creeping in to Kollywood who
were completely depended on comedians and a side comedy track to do the trick.
Director Balaji has managed to maintain suspense even when the scene is comic
and it was nice to see the whole screen break out in laughter through the
length of the movie.
Another
smart aspect of the movie is the fact that there were no unwarranted deviations
in the screen play, no unwanted songs, no separate comedy track as I mentioned
above and through this we are able to relate better to the characters pains and
thus enjoy the movie better. AS a matter of fact this movie has only 2 songs;
one is the title track and then the promo song. The Director smartly places the
promo song as soon as the interval is over and that too with a note “The promo
song of the movie is placed here for you to enjoy”, the number is quite peppy
and shot comically and thus we do enjoy.
This
movie is a very good plat form for Vijay Sethupathi to showcase his acting
talent and he does that with ease, his role and condition in the movie mandates
that he repeats one dialogue though the length of the movie and he does so with
élan, the tempo and modulation all intact. That was splendid work by him and
director as well. As the entire movie revolves around Prem and his friends it was
quite essential that all the 4 perform very well and that has been the fact.
All the 4 were fantastic in their roles and did justice to the casting. The
director was ably supported by Prem Kumar (Cinematographer), editing (R.
Govindaraj) was splendid too. The BGM did justice to the movie to maintain its
subtleness as well as suspense, BGM was by Ved Shanakar who also happened to be
the producer and the songs were composed by SIddharth Vipin. Overall a great
team effort.
Like many reviewers I will also go
with 4/5 *s for this movie and that is purely my opinion, you should go watch
this movie to enjoy it and its one such movie which can be an addition to your
home theater system as well (after they release the original DVD). So go watch
an enjoy a good family entertainer guys, rush cause such good movies does not
sustain in theaters for long.
